Assen is the most appreciated station in Drenthe
In the annual Station Experience Monitor (Stationsbelevingsmonitor, SBM) of ProRail and NS (Dutch Railways), travellers are asked for their opinions about stations. With a 7,6, Assen scores higher than the national average of 7,21 and ranks number 1 in the list of stations in Drenthe.
According to NS, this survey highlights the importance of the connection between station and surroundings. Sebastiaan de Wilde, NS Stations board chairman, even states, “A station only gets a soul when it is connected to its surroundings.”
It is no coincidence that this is an essential aspect of Assen Station. The triangular station roof completely spans the newly expanded railway line and thus fulfils a key role in connecting eastern and western city districts. At the time, this was the first time in the Netherlands that a railway line was being bridged in wood and marked the first realisation of this concept. The ensemble of brick, wood and glass matches the character of the capital of Drenthe and provides a grand entrance to the city in a simple, and also intrinsically spacious way. We are therefore delighted to hear that travellers rate the station very positively.
