Choosing to walk has only advantages. For the city, for society and for walkers themselves. Yet the pedestrian is often forgotten in the design of the public space. Research commissioned by the Board of Government Advisers shows that walking in urban areas can gain popularity by increasing the quality of a walk. ‘Make “near” the new normal, to prevent us from becoming much more mobile,’ Daan Zandbelt, government adviser for the physical living environment and partner at De Zwarte Hond, wrote in his introduction.
