De Zwarte Hond wins EU tender for Cluster Zuid at Leiden University

De Zwarte Hond together with DGMR are to start with the redevelopment of the Cluster Zuid university building in Leiden. This Humanities Faculty building (FGW) was designed by Joop van Stigt in the nineteen-seventies and belongs to the Structuralism movement, as does the adjacent university library.

Once the redevelopment is completed, the building with its characteristic mushroom columns will comply with the current requirements and wishes of the Faculty. The point of departure is to transform the building into an attractive and recognisable location for Leiden University’s institute for Area Studies (LiAS), the Royal Netherlands institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KiTLV), the Netherlands institute for the Near East (NiNO) and the African Studies Centre Leiden (ASC). in the redevelopment particular attention was given to improving the building’s environmental performance.

After the summer De Zwarte Hond and Leiden University will embark on the design process. The building is expected to be operational again in 2022.
