Can a large building contribute to a lively city centre?
Wohnstätte Krefeld bought eight connecting plots in the centre of Krefeld. The aim was to realise a multifunctional centre here, with a mix of offices, restaurants, homes, healthcare and retail. In 2014, together with Office 03, De Zwarte Hond won the competition for the design
The division into individual volumes creates customisation
The ensemble of individually distinguishable volumes is in line with the different scales of the surrounding buildings and ensures that each function is given its own recognisable place within the whole. The connecting element is the passage that runs through the complex.
Multifunctional centre Krefeld
The multifunctional centre in the heart of Krefeld contains a mix of offices, restaurants, homes, healthcare and shops, in a location characterised by both large blocks and small-scale residential construction. These different scales, in combination with a complex lot, required a differentiated infill. In collaboration with Office 03, De Zwarte Hond created an ensemble of individually distinguishable volumes that nevertheless present themselves as a unit. This diversity connects the different scales of the surrounding buildings and ensures that each function has its own recognisable place within the whole. A passage running through the complex provides overview, air and spaciousness. Because the complex is divided into individual volumes, customisation was possible. By shifting the volumes relative to each other, a wide, double-height entrance to the passage was created on the Ostwall. A solid corner was created on Neuer Linner Strasse with a five-storey volume. On Petersstrasse, the recessed blocks create space for terraces.
