Transformation Rode Weeshuisstraat and Alliander Westpoort published in the Architecture in the Netherlands Yearbook

Yesterday was the launch of the Architecture in the Netherlands Yearbook at the Nieuwe Instituut. We are delighted that this 37th edition that reviews the architecture in the  year 2023/2024 features no less than two projects by De Zwarte Hond: Transformation of the Rode Weeshuisstraat in Groningen and Alliander’s regional office in Amsterdam.

The evening began with a discussion, led by Dore van Duivenbode, featuring Jeroen de Willigen, Esther Agricola, Fahid Minhas, Mohamed Baba, Wilma Kempinga, Nina Aalbers, Rick ten Doeschate, Rubén Dario Kleimeer. It revolved around urgent themes in society such as sustainability, inclusiveness and economics, the (political) role of the architect and how to leave more room for quality, imagination and inspiration. Sustainability and reuse formed a common thread within this year’s selection. Themes that closely link with De Zwarte Hond’s two selected projects.

Alliander’s new regional office, an example of sustainability and flexibility, recently attracted a lot of attention. With an innovative wooden construction, the offices and training facilities offer a healthy and adaptable working environment. The project includes offices, workshops, warehouses, test rooms, training areas and a car park. Alliander Westpoort exemplifies sustainability, contributing to a circular, climate-adaptive and nature-inclusive environment.

De Zwarte Hond and Loer Architecten transformed Rode Weeshuisstraat from a back alley of the Grote Markt to the city centre’s front with a new urban plan. Here, we realised the Groot Handelshuis and The Warehouse, as well as, together with Loer Architecten, the newly built Mercado project. These projects revitalise the public space.

The editors of the 2023/2024 yearbook were Uri Gilad (Office Winhov), Stephan Petermann (MANN and VOLUME) and Annuska Pronkhorst (Crimson Historians & Urbanists).
