Transforming Post 65 architecture
Yesterday, our architect/partner Bart Van Kampen attended a debate organised by Platform Post 65. The aim was to gain insight into the strategic approach to safeguard heritage from the period after 1965, and what opportunities and threats exist.
In its conclusion, the debate highlighted the intention to preserve heritage. Not only because of its cultural-historical value, but also from a sustainability perspective. Especially when looking at material use, since concrete is a significant CO2 polluter and contributes to global warming. The proposal is to look at programme options that fit the building because arguing for a sustainable building based only on operation and energy never justifies the decision to demolish.
For Leiden University, De Zwarte Hond has the responsibility to renovate and newly construct the Faculty of Humanities: Cluster Zuid and Noord. In the late 1970s, architect Joop van Stigt designed the special Cluster Zuid building. In our circular renovation, we reuse the striking concrete columns and wooden ceiling panels. For Cluster Noord, demolition is the approach while at the same time preserving the cultural-historical values, renewing materials that come back in the new building.
In the execution, we work together with Combinatie Cluster Zuid: Constructif, Nelissen ingenieursbureau and Kuijpers, as well as HARRYVAN, New Horizon and BWRI.
