How do you create a new gateway to the city?
Spijkenisse Metro Centrum
Spijkenisse Metro Centrum will form the new gateway to the city centre. With its two striking residential buildings, vibrant ground-floor functions and refined architectural design, this area around the metro and bus station will gain a completely new identity. The ambition of the municipality and of De Zwarte Hond is to create a vibrant, safe and attractive urban environment where living, socializing and travelling converge. The redevelopment will strengthen the connection between public transport and the city centre. Through new construction and redesigned public spaces with increased greenery, the area will acquire a high-quality, future-proof appearance. The two buildings – Block A and Block B – each shape the new urban edge in their own unique way. Their robust volumes, high plinths and carefully chosen brickwork in warm pink tones create a chic contemporary look that matches the city centre’s ambitions. Over 220 apartments and various commercial functions on the ground floor create a lively urban mix. The lofty ground floor accentuates the urban feel and is enhanced by the architecture. The plinth features coloured concrete in a rugged design that evokes the cranes in the port of Rotterdam. The balconies and eaves are shaped to create a cohesive appearance, forming a sturdy urban block that perfectly suits Spijkenisse.

A cohesive urban gateway
The development of Metro Centrum Spijkenisse is an important step in the renewal of the station area. Where previously isolated functions such as bicycle parking, car parks and offices predominated, a cohesive urban ensemble is now emerging. The new residential buildings frame the space and direct traffic flows, while the design of the public space invites visitors to linger. This gives the area the allure of a full-fledged gateway to the city, where travellers and residents converge in a green, well-organized and pleasant residential area. The plinth will house amenities designed to enhance the area’s dynamic atmosphere, including restaurants, a small supermarket and a shop. In addition, the bicycles currently parked in the public area will now be accommodated in a public bicycle parking facility. This will create space to improve the quality of life in the public area with greenery and a café and restaurant terrace.
Two buildings, one identity
Block A is connected to the existing buildings along the Centrumlaan and consists of six storeys above an underground car park. A spacious plinth containing commercial spaces brings the street to life and connects the city centre with the station. Block B, located on Ruwaard van Puttenweg, is a striking 15-storey landmark. Both buildings have a lofty ground floor of 4.8 metres in height, creating a transparent and spacious plinth. Meanwhile the residential floors above maintain a sense of tranquillity and privacy.
Block A will house compact, affordable apartments in response to the high demand for starter homes in Spijkenisse. This gives young people the opportunity to stay in their hometown, and with the metro right outside, Rotterdam city centre is just a short journey away.
Warm and refined brickwork
The Metro Centrum Spijkenisse façades are distinguished by the warm pink tones and rich texture of the brickwork, which alternates with rugged concrete in a similar shade. The vertical articulation reinforces the stately quality of the buildings, while the soft tones provide warmth and familiarity. Together, these features give Spijkenisse a new, prestigious gateway – a place where urban dynamism and quality of life go hand in hand.

Metro Centrum Spijkenisse is a new urban gateway where living, meeting and travelling converge.
