Midwerk building in Sappemeer put into use
The new building for Midwerk on Oude Winschoterdiep in Sappemeer has officially been put into use. Commissioned by the Municipality of Midden-Groningen, De Zwarte Hond designed a sustainable and circular building in which a biobased timber supporting structure is combined with the reuse of existing structural components.
Midwerk supports residents of the Municipality of Midden-Groningen in the areas of employment, development, reintegration, and income security. The new building provides a clear and accessible working environment for these activities. Around a central atrium, workshops, public functions, and offices are interconnected.
The new construction features a demountable timber structure with exposed wooden floors and flexible floor plans. Existing steel trusses and concrete floors have largely been preserved and reused, significantly reducing material consumption and CO₂ emissions.
With its brick architecture and industrial character, the Midwerk building connects seamlessly to the historic surroundings of Hoogezand-Sappemeer.
“In fact, everyone is happy here; we were able to reuse so much. The client had never expected that beforehand. Cost efficiency went hand in hand with our sustainability ambitions.”
— Henk Stadens, partner and architect at De Zwarte Hond
