Herta Mohr nominated for the Gulden Feniks 2025
The Herta Mohr Building – part of the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University – has been selected as one of ten nominees for the NRP Gulden Feniks 2025, the leading award for renovation and transformation of the built environment.
The original 1970s design by Joop van Stigt has been carefully transformed by De Zwarte Hond into a contemporary learning environment. The renovation stands out for its preservation of the original structure and façade, combined with circular construction principles. Materials such as bricks, wooden ceiling panels, and concrete elements were given a second life within the renewed building. For example, the wooden ceiling panels were harvested, processed in collaboration with social enterprise BWRI, and reused as wall cladding in the atrium.
The jury praises projects that demonstrate vision, perseverance, and social impact – with a focus on existing real estate and a logical, natural approach to sustainability.
The winners will be announced on 4 November 2025 during the NRP Congress.
