Building level / Recommendation 6: Give a school its own building

How do we build the best school buildings in the right locations in Groningen?

In the project Schoolvoorbeeld, an initiative by the Municipality of Groningen in collaboration with KAW and De Zwarte Hond, the municipality is working together with architects, urban planners, school boards, teachers, students, and residents to explore what the school building of the future should look like. Because a school is much more than just a place for learning; it is a social meeting point in the neighborhood, with space for development, physical activity, and connection.

The results of this research are compiled in a book, curated by Bart van Kampen, featuring contributions from professionals involved in the project as well as from children.

The publication offers 35 practical recommendations for future-proof school construction on three scales: building, neighborhood, and city level. The core message: choose small-scale, recognizable school buildings that are well distributed and firmly embedded in their communities. Although the recommendations are based on research conducted in Groningen, they are applicable to any municipality in the Netherlands.
