Mercado Market Hall and luxury apartments bring light, air and dynamism to the Groningen street scene
Groningen city centre will gain a vibrant new locality. The space currently occupied by the Aldi supermarket, on an inconspicuous street behind the Grote Markt, will in the future accommodate the Mercado. A spacious covered market with luxury apartments above that are tiered so as to resemble the ridges of a quarry, each with its own green roof terrace and a spectacular panoramic view over the city. The new development introduces light, air and dynamism into this Groningen back street and also gives the city a new public space. The architect combination of De Zwarte Hond and Loer Architecten were responsible for the design, and MWPO and Beauvast for the new development.
