OutThere #5

OutThere is a bookazine about the relationship between design and society. OutThere #5 focuses on proximity: how bringing housing, work, amenities, and recreation closer together contributes to a healthier, more sustainable, and more livable environment. By creating more compact cities and multifunctional areas, we can better tackle major societal challenges such as housing shortages, mobility issues, and climate change.

Station areas play a key role in this transformation. These are the most accessible locations in the Netherlands, with direct connections to surrounding neighborhoods and cities. Yet, many of these areas remain underutilized. By developing them more intelligently—with more housing, workplaces, and facilities—they can evolve into vibrant hubs that enhance the quality of life across the country.

In this edition of OutThere, we explore from different perspectives how we can make better use of these station areas. We highlight the concrete steps needed to transform them into sustainable, future-proof, and dynamic urban centers.
