Dijk en Waard public transport hub

How does a public transport hub also connect a merged municipality?

Stationsplein 7, 1703 WD Heerhugowaard

Context

Since 1 January 2022, the station area has literally and figuratively been the heart of the new municipality of Dijk en Waard. In the coming decades, the station area will undergo a major transformation: from an extensive business and parking area to a lively, mixed-use and future-proof station quarter.

The station and its surrounding facilities are currently located around a level crossing. This unsafe situation calls for a new solution, in which the pedestrian and cycle route from Langedijk to Heerhugowaard passes under the railway. The new station, cycle sheds and other facilities will be organised around it. De Zwarte Hond and Arcadis have translated the spatial puzzle of all the building blocks into the development model for the Dijk en Waard public transport hub.

The station as a place where people want to be, the link between Dijk en Waard

The development plan for the Dijk en Waard public transport hub has been created using a finely honed methodology in which, based on thematic building blocks, we have worked towards a design in which the various aspects have been carefully weighed up and with which all the stakeholders can identify.

For each of the themes and (sub-)tasks, several distinctive solution directions have been formulated: we call these building blocks. In essence, these are design solutions for the various themes and tasks in the area, such as the organisation of the building blocks, green structures or mobility. The different building blocks represent at least all the prevailing opinions around the table.

Using combinations of the building blocks that have the most support, we have created several development models – and the development plan has emerged from the strong points of each model.

Independant building blocks

The design concept focuses on making the building blocks independent, ensuring the development plan is straightforward to implement. By treating the various elements of the project – from the new station building to the underpass and the redevelopment of the station square – as separate yet well-coordinated units, we can adapt flexibly to different phases of execution and the planning of the surrounding area. This approach allows for an efficient transition between the various components while maintaining the overall coherence and quality of the project.

At the station you have one foot in the countryside

A pleasant link between Langedijk and Heerhugowaard

A lively place that connects both sides

A cohesive whole in the new station area

Dijk en Waard public transport hub

This is what the new public transport hub in Dijk en Waard could look like. A pleasant place to visit, where the new underpass will connect you to the neighbourhoods and villages in the area. This development model has been created by skilfully combining the wishes and requirements of all the existing and future users and connecting them to the surrounding environment. In this way, the different modes of transport and urban functions have all been given a place where they reinforce each other as much as possible. The strength of this model is that each building block can be individually adapted and phased. This makes the model robust and resilient to any developments in the area. The development plan for the Dijk en Waard public transport hub was drawn up in close collaboration between De Zwarte Hond and Arcadis, on behalf of the municipality of Dijk en Waard, NS Stations, ProRail and the province of Noord-Holland. The strength of the design is partly due to the cooperation, openness and dialogue between all the parties involved.
