Urban Development Plan for Stadskade Almelo Adopted

Commissioned by the Municipality of Almelo, De Zwarte Hond—working in collaboration with Polyfern Landscape Architects and Rho Adviseurs—has spent the past year developing the urban development plan for the Stadskade in Almelo.

Stadskade is set to become the city’s living room: a place where visitors, residents and other people from Almelo can stroll along the water and meet one another in the public space, on terraces, or in the sheltered calm of green inner courtyards.

This living room will have a distinctly mixed character, combining culture, housing and hospitality. The former supermarket site will be transformed into a cultural hotspot featuring a rooftop garden and a unique pavilion. In addition, the plan provides space for approximately 90 to 100 homes across different price ranges, as well as hospitality venues at strategic locations, with the water acting as a clear spatial backbone.

The plan introduces a new urban structure with ensembles, sheltered inner courtyards and clear routes throughout the area. A key design decision is the redevelopment of the existing Stadsbaken parking garage, which is rotated by a quarter turn in the new design to better integrate it into the urban fabric.

With the adoption of this urban development plan, an important step has been taken towards realising Almelo’s living room.
