Urban design plan Kop van Skoatterwâld completed

Together with Polyfern Landscape Architects and the municipality of Heerenveen, De Zwarte Hond has completed the urban design plan, public space design, and image quality plan for Kop van Skoatterwâld in Heerenveen.

The development builds on the area vision for the Sportive Heart of Heerenveen. This vision lays the foundation for the inner-city densification of Heerenveen, accommodating approximately 800 homes. It also strengthens the connection to Heerenveen’s sporting DNA, including the further development of a campus with national appeal, featuring top-level sports facilities such as the Abe Lenstra Stadium and the Epke Zonderland Gymnastics Centre.

De Kop van Skoatterwâld is a sub-plan within this broader vision. The urban plan for this area establishes the foundation for a green, vibrant neighbourhood with a strong sporting character. With space for more than 200 homes, it creates a relaxed living environment where meeting, movement and leisure are central. Clear urban design principles ensure cohesion and identity. A carefully selected palette of warm-toned brick forms the foundation for the architecture, creating a calm and recognisable whole while allowing for variation. By building on the ambitions of the overarching vision—where sport and physical activity are key—the plan establishes a green, sustainable, and healthy neighbourhood, firmly rooted in its surroundings.
