A railway zone becomes a lively city district

Last week, De Zwarte Hond actively contributed to the Week of SHE (Station area Hengelo Enschede). Our approach for this week was ‘Talent at Number One’ – a great topic to link the cooperation between the two cities to soft values and the long-term regional future.

During the closing event, urban planner and partner Daan Zandbelt presented our vision for SHE to turn this shared railway zone into a vibrant urban district. We wanted to bring a multilayered approach  into focus using a figurative ‘Twente Escalator’. This includes:

heart for the existing neighbourhoods with broad schools
transforming excess traffic arteries into nice places for schoolchildren and other vulnerable groups
creating more diversity, among other things by densifying near the stations
more innovation and exchange by making it easier for doers and thinkers to meet each other

We want to get this escalator rolling again, so that the Twente region will offer opportunities to everyone and the cities there make a shift from brain drain to brain gain!

Together with PosadMaxwan, Strootman Landscape Architects, Claudia Martelli, Lilly Petter and experts from the Municipality of Enschede and the Municipality of Hengelo, we worked hard with all participants to create a more diverse, lively and innovative Twente!
