Agaathhof in the race for BNA Best Building Award 2017
The Agaathhof, along with eight other buildings, is in the race for the BNA Best Building Award 2017. The Volkskrant (a Dutch daily quality newspaper) announced the nine nominees on 21 March. With this award the sector association aims to draw attention to the added value of architecture for clients and society.
A six-member jury chaired by Hans Wijers, a former politician, selected the nine projects. The after-effects of the crisis in the sluggish building sector are still palpable. This is reflected in the number of entries, but also in the designs – less spectacular architecture. Many of the projects are meticulously interwoven into the existing city, as is the case with Agaathhof, nominated in the “private living environment” category.
The residents in Agaathhof live in an oasis of peace, in the midst of the bustling centre of Groningen. Designing the housing project as a reinterpretation of a typical Groningen courtyard has created a very pleasant living environment with every modern convenience. The residents’ parking facilities are under the housing, the spatial layout creates maximum daylight and residents have private and collective external space.
The presentation of the BNA award will take place on 19 May in Utrecht.
