Daan Zandbelt appointed as the new Chief of Railway Design

ProRail and NS appoint urban designer and architect Daan Zandbelt as the new Chief of Railway Design. As of January 1, 2026, he will succeed Marianne Loof. With Zandbelt, Bureau Spoorbouwmeester once again gains an experienced urban designer and spatial advisor as its figurehead.

As Chief of Railway Design, Daan Zandbelt is tasked with advising and inspiring the boards of ProRail and NS on urban design, architecture, interior design, landscape, graphic design, heritage, and art — in and around stations, railways, and railway environments. He is also responsible for promoting, updating, and further developing the Spoorbeeld, the overarching design policy for the Dutch railway sector. With this appointment, ProRail and NS continue their joint commitment to ensuring spatial quality within the railway domain.

Zandbelt commented:

“I am deeply honored to take on this role. Dutch station environments have set a new international standard, and Bureau Spoorbouwmeester has played an indispensable part in that achievement. I look forward to continuing this trajectory, focusing on balanced (rail) networks and more inclusive stations. As a bridge builder, I hope to forge alliances among the various parties involved in station development.”
