Exhibition ‘Mooi Mokum – An Alternative Building Code for Housing Happiness’
The Arcam exhibition ‘Mooi Mokum – An Alternative Building Code for Housing Happiness’ explores how Amsterdam will build 150,000 quality homes over the next 30 years. We invite everyone to the opening on October 24 where a conversation about identity in the city will take place with, among others, Violette Schönberger (bureau Falsework), Marius Heijn (Rochedale) and Flora Nycolaas and Josja van der Veer (Municipality of Amsterdam).
The focus now is mainly on where and how much we build, but is there enough attention for quality? If the municipality meets its targets, almost a quarter of the housing stock will consist of large collective housing blocks and towers. This makes the question of whether these homes are good homes all the more important.
Housing quality is getting plenty of attention again in the architectural world. Recently, several design collectives and agencies published studies on high-density residential buildings. For example, De Zwarte Hond released the bookazine “OutThere #4 Residential Floor Plans,” in which we argue for more focus on residential floor plans in the design task.
In addition to this, the Space & Sustainability Department of the City of Amsterdam, together with students from TU Delft, presents ‘Mooi Mokkum’ (Beautiful Mokum), a study on the quality of residential buildings.
In collaboration with architecture firms De Zwarte Hond, BETA, Common Practice, Falsework, MVRDV, Platform Woonopgave and experts, the city developed an alternative building code that contributes to increased living happiness. The TU Delft students also created a future image of high-density living. This exhibition aims to inspire the conversation about urban living.
