Final design for Katshoek shows the adaptability of this historical building

The transformation goes hand in hand with that of its surroundings, the Zomerhofkwartier (ZOHO), from industrial estate to a vibrant neighbourhood. Originally a business centre, the Katshoek becomes a residential building with about 250 apartments, a lively plinth and 1-storey topping.

In our design, we respect the existing qualities of the monumental building while expanding on Huig Maaskant’s design. The facade’s flatness is preserved, the balconies’ heavy plasticity is brought back, and the staircases as well as the artwork are renovated. The additional floor on top will be made of a different material, which emphasises the building’s special qualities.

The flexibility of the existing structure allows for different housing types in the building. At the same time, the design refers to the industrial character, giving the plinth a new robust appearance. In this way, the Katshoek building can last decades again and adds to the new neighbourhood’s liveliness.
