Luxury apartments in school built in 1882

The former school building on Boteringesingel in Groningen is being transformed into a luxury apartment building with a communal garden, overlooking the Noorderplantsoen park. The building, dating back to 1882, was a state primary school. A type of “corridor school” with twelve classrooms built in the so-called chalet style. Since the late seventies the building has been used for secondary and art education and in recent years it was rented out to prevent squatters.

The school’s existing structure will be retained as the basis for the four apartments that will be built in it: two apartments on the ground floor, one on the first floor and one in the loft area. The main entrance will return to its original position in the middle of the building on Noorderbinnensingel. And the original chalet construction on the Noorderplantsoen side will also be reconstructed. The two apartments on the first floor and in the loft will have their own external space in the form of a veranda. The remaining changes are all new and will be designed as such.

The building permit has meanwhile been applied for and the sale of the apartments will commence in the coming months.
