Municipal council confirms Development Framework for Spoorzone Hoofddorp

On 27 September, the Municipal Council of Haarlemmermeer confirmed the Development Framework for Spoorzone Hoofddorp (station area Hoofddorp). This is an outline plan that we worked on together with MVRDV and flux landscape architects which guides future developments in Spoorzone Hoofddorp.

By turning Spoorzone Hoofddorp into a pleasant urban place to live, work and stay, this area offers a unique opportunity to make a scale leap in urbanity in the polder. Around the station, there will be space to build up to 10.000 homes and adding extra programme. At the same time, public transport use will be stimulated by extending the North/South metro line from Schiphol to Hoofddorp.

Spoorzone Hoofddorp will get a greater diversity of living environments and have additional job opportunities. To achieve cohesion in the area and connect it with its surroundings, there will be intentionality in creating intensity and function mixing. It will become an urban area, but also remain part of the polder. The urban diversity of different zones of hush, buzz and fuzz will be combined with the cultural-historical qualities of the characteristic, original pattern of watercourses called polder grid. The buzz zones are characterised through pleasant liveliness and a more bustling atmosphere. In contrast, the hush areas are characterised by tranquillity and will be predominantly residential. Along the railway and in areas where there’s the greatest mix of living and working is the fuzz zone. Here, there’s an extra focus on work functions.

Its unique location in the polder, near Schiphol Airport and the metro extension create the conditions for area development. Furthermore, Spoorzone is being developed with a focus on cyclists and pedestrians. The streets and squares will be largely car-free and cars will not beĀ  the standard here. This approach creates space for water and green, encouraging walking and cycling, resulting in an area that is mixed in various ways while offering cohesion with the city centre.
