New perspectives for the powerplant villages!

With the planned phase-out of lignite, the Rhineland region is undergoing a fundamental transformation. For Frimmersdorf and Neurath, this transition offers an opportunity to develop new perspectives. In collaboration with RMPSL Landscape Architects, and together with the local community, De Zwarte Hond has developed a master plan that paves the way for a sustainable future for these villages.

Through an intensive participatory process – from village conferences to workshops with primary school children – ideas were gathered and translated into concrete strategies. The focus is on redesigning the village centers, developing a blue-green hub as a recreational area, and improving connectivity by upgrading street spaces and ensuring safe access to the train station. These measures strengthen social interaction and promote sustainable development.

A major milestone has now been reached: last week, the Grevenbroich City Council officially approved the master plan. This clears the way for implementation, and the transformation of the power plant villages can begin. Our special thanks go to the City of Grevenbroich for the excellent collaboration and to NRW.URBAN Service GmbH for supporting this project!
