Ode to the brick in Nijmegen

In their new series, the Van Rossum brothers visit several Dutch cities and regions, including Nijmegen. In the next episode, bricks take centre stage and Vincent and Maarten van Rossum discover that there is a whole world behind this product. One of the places featured under this theme is our Hart van de Waalsprong project, which associate Lisa van der Slot explains.

Hart van de Waalsprong is the amenities centre of the new residential area of Nijmegen north of the Waal, near Lent. The assignment consisted of giving the amenities centre the character of a ‘town’, including the accompanying pleasant atmosphere.

De Zwarte Hond designed the urban plan and shopping area, while De Urbanisten was responsible for the landscape design. The cyclist and pedestrian are central throughout the plan and there is a good connection to the public transport network. The district is also climate-adaptive. The architecture builds on the traditional brick architecture of Nijmegen.
