Opening of the first energy neutral shopping centre in the Netherlands
Last week, Hart van de Waalsprong was opened in the North of Nijmegen. Mayor Hubert Bruls expressed his delight at the project’s realisation. “This is truly a heart for the Waalsprong, adding not only the necessary facilities but also liveliness and a meeting place to this part of town.”
The architecture further builds on the distinctive Nijmegen brick architecture, reinforcing the urban design. We designed a shopping centre that is energy-neutral, climate-adaptive and nature-inclusive. Energy is generated locally and sustainably as much as possible. On the roof of the parking building, for example, there are more than 1.200 PV panels that directly power both the shopping centre and local housing.
The new sustainable shopping centre is part of the large-scale area development Hart van de Waalsprong in Nijmegen, which AM Gebiedsontwikkeling is realising together with VanWonen. Besides the shopping area, we also designed the urban development plan. De Urbanisten are responsible for the landscape design.
