How do you make a school sustainable and playful?

Nieuwerbrug aan de Rijn

IKC De Brug

Existing situation
On the outskirts of the village of Nieuwerbrug aan de Rijn, a new primary school for all the village children is being built as part of an extension to the village. In order to ensure a smooth transition between nursery and primary education and after-school care, it was decided to bring them together in the new building of the De Brug school and children’s centre (Integraal Kind Centrum, IKC). This will make it possible to learn and work together with a single educational vision.

A sustainable building with a playful design
The school board and the municipality had clear sustainability goals for the new school building. The building had to be ‘zero on the meter’, i.e. completely self-sufficient in terms of energy consumption, and built as much as possible from bio-based materials. Here a key choice was to use a timber supporting structure.

For the façade, we decided on brickwork using the English bond, because this is strong and long-lasting. As a result, it will not be immediately obvious from the outside that the building has a timber construction, but the surprise will be all the greater when you enter it. Inside, we have left the wooden trusses, joists and columns as visible as possible. The roof is completely green and the PV panels are positioned as much as possible on the high sports hall volume. With its green roofs, the school meets high sustainability standards, of which it is a visible example in the district.

The building has a clearly recognizable silhouette and is located in the middle of the site, which means that it is surrounded on all sides by greenery. The green entrance square will be on the north side, and the play areas for the youngest and older children will be on the east and west sides respectively. The façade on the north side (the village side) refers to the village character with its roof shape and is given a playful character by the slight curve. The south façade (the polder side) has a more robust appearance and gives the building a recognizable silhouette from a distance.

Stimulating cooperation and multifunctional use
The strength of the IKC is that all three partners are already close to each other in the current location and therefore know each other well. With the new building, we are stimulating this connection and cooperation even more by organizing the different partners around a central heart. All classrooms will have a transition zone to the heart to maintain peace and order in the classrooms.

In the heart of the building there will be space for multifunctional uses such as the teaching kitchen, library and stage. By connecting the gymnasium to the heart, the building can accommodate larger festivities such as a Sinterklaas procession or a communal Christmas dinner.

IKC De Brug

The De Brug school and children’s centre (Integraal Kind Centrum, IKC) in Nieuwerbrug aan de Rijn combines a playgroup, primary education and after-school care. The school board and the municipality wanted high sustainability standards and it was quickly decided to work with a timber construction. The strength of the centre lies in the fact that with this new building we stimulate even more connection and cooperation by organizing the different partners around a central heart. All the classrooms will have a transition zone to the heart to maintain peace and order in the classrooms.
