Hilversum Station Area

What to do when you want to repair the city?

Hilversum Station Area

In the late nineteenth century, Hilversum was connected to the railway network. For the area between the station and the city centre, De Zwarte Hond, together with OKRA Landscape Architects, developed an urban design plan that builds on the site’s historical development. At the time, the railway was constructed at a distance from the existing settlement, causing subsequent growth to take place partly in the area between the centre and the railway line. The resulting development followed reclamation structures that did not logically align with the fabric of the historic village. In the 1970s, the construction of a major traffic artery — the Schapenkamp — further weakened the spatial relationship between the station and the city centre. This disruption continues to affect the orientation and wayfinding experience of visitors to Hilversum today. The new urban design plan forms the missing piece of the puzzle, reconnecting the station and the city centre. The qualities of Hilversum’s historic centre provide the inspiration: village greens, lively streets, and generous space for cyclists, pedestrians and greenery. The urban fabric is naturally extended towards the station, with new building volumes emerging within the defined contours that align with the scale and proportions of the city centre. By extending the centre all the way to the station, the eastern part of Hilversum is once again integrated into the heart of the city.

Station and city centre reconnected
The area between Hilversum centre and its station was created in 1874, when the first station was built some distance from the heart of the village. In the following decades, a good link between the station and the centre never materialised. In the 1970s, the construction of the Schapenkamp, a busy road through the centre, made the division even stronger.

Commissioned by Hilversum city council, De Zwarte Hond and OKRA Landscape architects drew up an urban development plan that reconnects the station area with the historic centre and brings the surrounding neighbourhood to life.

Design based on Hilversum’s human scale
The design carefully extends the qualities of the historic centre up to the station. It reintegrates the station area and the eastern part of Hilversum with the city centre. It responds to the special characteristics of Hilversum: the human scale, the green space, lively streets, the generously sized pedestrian areas and the network of public squares and narrow alleys.
