Research project on quality in urban districts launched

De Zwarte Hond is part of the ExWoSt research project “Strategies and instruments for quality assurance in the development of new urban districts,” commissioned by the Bundesinstitut für Bau-, Stadt- und Raumforschung (BBSR) and the Bundesministerium für Wohnen, Stadtentwicklung und Bauwesen (BMWSB).

Germany urgently needs new housing. However, quantity alone is not enough. Urban districts must endure for generations and embody social and ecological values. Future-proof neighbourhoods can only emerge when urban design quality is considered from the very beginning.

Together with a transdisciplinary team from academia and practice, we analyse case studies, consolidate practical knowledge from planning, permitting, implementation, and operation, and translate these insights into various formats and publications in collaboration with experts. In doing so, De Zwarte Hond contributes its planning expertise in the development of complex, sustainable urban districts directly to the research process.

We look forward to collaborating with BBSR, BMWSB, the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, Universität Siegen, Universität Kassel, Gretas, and Ellery Studio. We will share insights and updates here as the project progresses.
