Elsdorf: From Opencast Mine to Lakeside City
The first concrete measure of “Hafenbalkon Elsdorf” (Elsdorf Harbour Balcony) has been approved. With the starter project Zukunftsboje (Future Buoy), the journey towards a new place by the future lake in the Rhenish mining region officially begins.
Hafenbalkon Elsdorf is set to develop into a waterside quarter. Ahead of that, a high-quality open space with diverse uses will emerge on the site.
De Zwarte Hond has developed an overall concept made up of individual measures. The Zukunftsboje, a mobile information and events pavilion, marks the starting point. It makes the transformation visible early on and establishes the idea of the Hafenbalkon within the urban space. Going forward, it will travel through the city, bring people together and spark conversation about Elsdorf’s future.
The pavilion’s form, designed by De Zwarte Hond, takes its cue from the buoy as a maritime symbol of orientation, visibility and movement. It stands as a symbol for the shift from a lignite opencast mining area to a future-facing region.
The first exchange with residents took place during a Zukunftsspaziergang (future walk). De Zwarte Hond, together with the City of Elsdorf, presented the plans for the Hafenbalkon and explored potential locations for the Zukunftsboje with residents.
The active involvement of the residents of Elsdorf remains an essential part of the project. Through participation formats and community building activities, the concept will continue to be developed and implemented.
Our thanks go to the planning and design offices endboss GmbH, atelier le balto and BeL Sozietät für Architektur, whose creative input helped shape the action plan.
Together with the City of Elsdorf, we are delighted that the Zukunftsboje has created a visible starting point for the transformation of the Rhenish mining region.
