New sustainable bus station in Hilversum

Recently, the zoning plan to transform the Hilversum station area was confirmed. Part of this plan is a new, sustainable bus station at Hilversum Central station that we design together with Studio RAP.

The design team conceived two customized timber canopies, serving to establish a distinctive bus station that enhances the identity of Hilversum as a green city and media hub of the Netherlands.

The utilization of folded timber panels creates a unique canopy design that combines expressive aesthetics with structural efficiency. These canopies not only provide shelter but also create an inviting space for social interactions and comfortable waiting. The thoughtfully incorporated perforations contribute to a unique interplay of light during the day, while in the evening, the canopies are dynamically illuminated by the artistically designed light installation by RNDR.

Over the next ten years, the Hilversum station area will undergo a radical transformation to become a vibrant place focusing on enjoyable travel, living and working experiences. The bus station is part of the municipality’s ambitious urban development plan, which we developed in collaboration with OKRA.
