Rijnvliet, an edible neighbourhood

“This edible neighbourhood shows that truly different ways of living together and interacting with nature are possible.”

Last weekend, an insightful article appeared about the edible residential neighbourhood Rijnvliet. Several residents and local parties are interviewed, together painting a picture of the challenges, but also the great results so far.

In this new neighbourhood, located in Utrecht’s Leidsche Rijn district, cooperation between residents and the municipality led to the idea of designing the public space as a central food forest. All the greenery is edible for humans, plants or animals. Thus, Rijnvliet offers value in food, nature and recreation.

The masterplan design for the edible residential area was developed in collaboration with Xavier San Giorgi of Æ Food Forestry Development and Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners, commissioned by the Municipality of Utrecht.
